Stationary Time Optimisation

The Problem

Unplanned stationary time costs European fleets millions every day — through unclear status information, undocumented waiting periods and inadequate interfaces with warehousing and fleet dispatch.

On average 10–15% of all trailer stationary time is avoidable — representing six-figure annual savings potential for large fleets

The KONVOI Approach

KONVOI delivers real-time stationary time data and complete documentation of all coupling operations — creating the data foundation for operational optimisation without manual effort.

Stationary Time: The Hidden Cost Driver in Logistics

Every trailer that stands still costs money. This is a fundamental truth of logistics that is nonetheless frequently measured inadequately in daily operational practice — and therefore steered inadequately as well. Unplanned stationary time arises from waiting periods at loading docks, lack of collection coordination, dispatch gaps and the absence of real-time status information.

Industry studies estimate that 10 to 15 per cent of all trailer stationary time is avoidable — caused not by operational necessity but by information gaps. For a mid-sized fleet of 50 trailers, this avoidable proportion can represent six-figure annual savings potential when the data are available and acted upon.

How Stationary Time Arises — and Why It Stays Hidden

A trailer waits for loading because the warehouse is not yet ready. Another trailer stands at the unloading point because no driver has been dispatched for collection. A third trailer is coupled at an intermodal hub, but the fleet manager has no current status — only the knowledge that the vehicle arrived there yesterday.

These situations arise not from lack of engagement from those involved, but from the absence of data availability. Conventional GPS systems provide position data but no information on coupling status or activity at the trailer. A stationary trailer at a dock looks identical to a trailer on a planned rest stop — without a coupling sensor, there is no distinction.

The Interface Between Dispatch and Warehousing

The real optimisation potential lies at the interface between warehouse logistics and fleet dispatch. If the dispatch team does not know whether a trailer is currently being loaded or unloaded, it cannot plan the next journey with precision. If the warehouse does not communicate when a trailer is ready for loading, the driver waits — at the operator’s cost and on the operator’s time.

This coordination gap is structural: it arises because the necessary data simply do not exist. Manual status updates by phone or application are error-prone and introduce delays. What is needed is an automatic, reliable data source that delivers coupling status and stationary time in real time — without manual input.

KONVOI as the Data Foundation for Operational Optimisation

KONVOI creates exactly this data foundation. The coupling sensor on the trailer automatically detects whether a trailer is coupled, uncoupled, being loaded or standing idle. This status information is available in real time and is recorded without gaps.

For fleet dispatch, this means: at a glance, they can see which trailers are available, which are currently being loaded or unloaded and which have been stationary for an unusually long period. This transparency enables proactive intervention — a call to the dock, a revision of the next assignment, an optimisation of the return journey.

The optional KONVOI Logbook add-on consolidates these data into trip-level reports: stops, coupling operations, stationary times — all in a clear PDF that can be used for internal analysis, customer communication and contract negotiations.

Measurable Efficiency Gains Without System Change

A decisive advantage of KONVOI: stationary time data are available without a system change or complex IT integration. The data can be used directly in the KONVOI dashboard or fed via a data interface into existing TMS (Transport Management System) platforms.

For fleet operators who have already invested in telematics, KONVOI supplements these systems with a layer that was previously missing: coupling status. Stationary time is thereby transformed from a hidden cost driver into a measurable, manageable parameter — the foundation for continuous efficiency improvement across the fleet.
